A man, 62 years old, who confessed to the murders of eight women in a coastal zone near New York City, was sentenced today to life imprisonment, with no right to conditional release, transmitted American media.
At the beginning of April the Rex Huerman stated guilty of kidnapping, torture and murder seven women in Long Island between 1993-2010. He also confessed to an eighth murder for which no prosecution had been brought against him.
The case came to light after the discovery, between 2010–2011, remains of about ten bodies along the Gilgo Beach coast, within an hour of downtown New York. The investigation focused on this architect from New York City in 2022, thanks to a vehicle registered in his name and on which witnesses had seen a victim. Arrested in the summer of 2023.
Researchers then discovered evidence of DNA and technological evidence (telephone records, computer files), especially at his home in Masapiqua Park, near coasts where the bodies had been found.
Some observers estimate that the investigation of the case, which was the subject of various documentaries, would have gone faster if the victims were not prostitutes.
‘I am responsible for everything said in this Chamber.“ Rex Huerman stated before his conviction, as CNN broadcasts.
When Judge Timothy Massey, who described the accused as a "avert and a minor man" and "a coward", asked him if he felt remorse, he answered affirmatively.
Prosecutor Ray Tierney, on the contrary, appreciated that the serial killer "is simply sorry for being arrested".
The case that shocked the US
The investigation began in 2010 when 23-year-old Shana Gilbert disappeared in Oak Beach, New York. In her search, authorities discovered the remains of another woman. Then three more bodies were found nearby, raising concerns about a serial killer.

After 13 years, investigators arrested the man responsible for the creepy crimes. It's about Rex Huerman, a 59-year-old rich architect arrested outside his office on Fifth Avenue.

The victims associated with Huerman are Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, which were discovered during the search for Shana Gilbert. All of them were published and advertised their services online, which made researchers believe that the killer initially contacted them through the platform.

During the investigation remains of four more women were discovered, including those of Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, a minor girl and an unknown Asian identity. In research that followed, the remains of two more people were found in the same geographical area, off Ocean Parkway. Shana Gilbert's remains had been discovered in 2011, a little further away from the rest of the victims, and specifically about 5 km away.
