In detail the communication
Once again we are witnessing incidents in which firefighting personnel are called upon to attempt under particularly dangerous circumstances, with a direct risk to their life and safety.

According to complaints that arrived at our Union, this afternoon a fire vehicle was called for firefighting in a Roma camp in the region of Aspropyrgos, where there was reportedly an attack by a group of about 20 people, endangering the firefighters operating at the site. The incident was attended by a seasonal firefighter, a P.E.TH. and a permanent official, without – as mentioned – the presence or assistance of the Greek Police. Our colleagues were attacked by Roma, tried to take their vehicle and materials out of their vehicle and received threats to their physical integrity if they did not leave the area.

We call for an immediate investigation of the incident by the Fire Corps Headquarters in order to determine under what circumstances the intervention order was given and whether the safety protocols envisaged were complied with.

At the same time, it is stressed that such incidents cannot continue as they seriously endanger the safety of firefighters and hinder the effective treatment of fires, which may result in their uncontrolled spread. There is a reasonable question as to who takes responsibility in such cases.

The Association is in constant communication with the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection on this issue, while on Friday at 8:00 in the Hellenic Parliament a timely question will be answered about this issue by Minister Evangelos Tournas.
