Marseille will not be able to add new football players to her main European list (‘List A’) for UEFA events in the 2026–27 season, as she did not comply with the economic goals set under an agreement with the CFCB, as UEFA announced today.
The French team, which has secured its participation in the Europa League of the next season, was among the clubs that were under the arrangements with the European Confederation and had to achieve specific economic objectives.
According to UEFA, Marseille "did not comply with the rules of football revenue for the 2025–26 season", which concerns the accounting periods completed in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
"List A" is the main roster that states each club in UEFA events, while "List B" includes young football players, mainly from the academies, who can be used per match.
UEFA also warned that in the event of a new failure to comply with economic goals in the 2026–27 season, Marseille would be eliminated from the next European event for which it will qualify within the next three years.
At the same time, the French club was fined six million euros, while an additional penalty of four million euros was imposed on it for violating the roster cost rule ("squad cost rule"), which prohibits teams from spending more than 70% of their total football revenue on player and coach salaries, transcriptions and agent fees.
In a communication, Marseille stressed that it would continue to make every effort to meet its commitments to UEFA and meet the conditions laid down.
"Marseille remains fully committed to its development on solid and sustainable sports, economic and financial bases," the club said.
UEFA also announced that Roma was fined with two million euros for violating the same rule, while Milan, Monaco, Besiktas, Inter, Paris St. Germen, Antwerp and Trumpsonspor complied with the objectives of their agreements and exited the relevant surveillance status.
