Financing of around EUR 3 million It was ensured to improve the accessibility of disabled people at the University of Crete, with the inclusion of the relevant project in the "Crete 2021-2027" Programme. The decision was signed by the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnautakis, aiming to upgrade university infrastructure in Rethymno and Heraklion, to make them fully accessible to disabled and hindered persons. The project, with the beneficiary of the University of Crete, concerns interventions at the level of building infrastructure that will ensure unobstructed access to training, research, administration and support areas. A total of 22 buildings and buildings are planned. In particular, 13 of them are located at the University of French in Rethymno, while another 9 at the University of Vouton in Heraklion. With the completion of interventions, fully accessible educational facilities will be able to serve up to 8,900 people, effectively enhancing participation in inclusive academic life.
The implementation of the project is scheduled to begin on 1 February 2027, with completion horizon in the summer of 2030. In a statement, the Region of Crete stressed that enhancing accessibility is a priority for the Region, noting that it is a modern university that ensures equal opportunities for all and enhances social cohesion.
"As a Region of Crete we stand actively next to our Educational and Research Institutions and the academic community, ensuring equal opportunities in education. Improving the accessibility of disabled persons and those prevented from attending the highest educational institutions of our island is a priority for us. With this work, we strengthen social cohesion and contribute to the creation of a modern, fully accessible University, without discrimination and exclusions," Mr. Arnautakis said.
The operation is part of the priority for the 'Strengthening Social Resources and Social Cohesion' and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
