2,873 births or 4.2% were recorded in the country last year, as live births amounted to 65,594 (33,620 boys and 31,974 girls), compared to 68,467 (35.216 boys and 33,251 girls) in 2024. While, the births of the dead amounted to 420, scoring a 7.5% decrease compared to 2024, where 454 births of the dead were recorded.

According to the new research by ELSTAT, in 2025 compared to 2024, the most significant reductions are recorded in November and January, by 10.4% and 10% respectively. The most significant increases are recorded in September and May, by 3% and 2.9% respectively.

From the analysis of all live births by age group of the mother in 2025 compared to 2015, the main reductions, at absolute values, are recorded for age groups 30 to 34 (12356 births), 25 to 29 years (7,922 births) and 35 to 39 years (4,597 births). While the main increases are observed for age groups 40 to 44 (1.031 births) and 45 to 49 years (445 births). Accordingly, according to the comparative analysis of all live births by age group of the mother in 2025 compared to 2005, the main reductions, at absolute values, are recorded for age groups 25 to 29 (20,775 births), 30 to 34 years (13,983 births) and 20 to 24 years (10,177 births). While the main increases are observed for age groups of 40 to 44 years (2,955 births) and 45 to 49 years (852 births).

The proportion of live births from mothers with Greek nationality to births from foreign mothers was 8.9 to 1 in 2025, compared to 6.7 to 1 in 2015 and 5.1 to 1 in 2005.

From the analysis of all live births per resident region of the mother in 2025 compared to 2024, there is a decrease in births in 12 out of 13 regions in the country. The most important reductions, in absolute terms, are recorded in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia and Peloponnese, by 1,007, 656 and 273 births respectively. While growth is observed only in the region of Crete, by 129 births.
