In a climate of deep emotion and pride the events of Honor and Memory for the hero aviator, Nicholas Sialma, took place today in Agios Efstratios. In the imposing monument that dominates over the vast blue of the Aegean, a memorial service was held and the proper military honours were attributed by the Armed Forces and the Air Force.

As quoted in limnoslive. gr, present were representatives of the state, armed forces, security bodies, local government and ordinary citizens who travelled to pay tribute to the man who became a symbol of self-denial and offering.

Particularly charged was the presence of his brother hero, who was also at the place of sacrifice this year, keeping the memory of Nicholas Sialma alive and carrying the timeless message of his sacrifice to the younger generations.

The only personal object to be rescued
The decision to transfer to Agios Efstratios this year the only personal object to be rescued by the wrongful pilot, his helmet. The capsule that is kept in the Air Force Museum, a silent but powerful symbol of memory. An object that carries the burden of history, sacrifice and national dignity.

Today 33 years ago, Lieutenant Nicholas Sialmas left his last breath in the Aegean, at the age of 27, defending the Greek sky. A young man an Air Force eagle who did not hesitate for a moment to perform his duty to the end.

The flighter of the 342 Weather Squadron of the 114 Battle Wing lost his life with the F-1CG fighter aircraft during air combat in the wider sea area south of St. Eustratium. He became the first Greek pilot to fall during the interception of Turkish fighters in a time of peace, writing his name in indelible letters in the history of the Air Force and the Nation.

The events were completed with greetings and speeches at the Museum of Falling Airmen, in the central square of Agios Efstratios, where memory turns into debt and history into a trust for the future.
