A few days are left to complete the census of the country's lifts, as on 30 June the deadline for their registration on the Elevator Census Register, without any further extension being possible. The process is already at its final stage, with the information from the General Secretariat of Industry showing that most of the country's installed lifts have been recorded, while the competent authorities address one last call to owners, administrators, maintainers and installers to complete the pending declarations.
The issue was at the heart of a working meeting held at the Independent Authority for Market Control and Consumer Protection with the participation of the General Secretariat of Industry of the Ministry of Development, the Administration of the Authority, the Bureau of PETAK, the Bureau of POBSA and the Bureau of POMID. During the meeting it was found that the census progresses smoothly and moves to very satisfactory levels, especially in the elevators that are systematically maintained.
According to the data presented, 263,087 lifts had been recorded on 30 November 2025, while on 19 June 2026 the number had reached 286,324. Based on ELSTAT's estimates, installed lifts in the country are estimated at around 310,000, which means that a very high percentage of the estimated total has already been recorded.
This picture is consistent, according to what was discussed at the meeting, with the data available to maintainers and installers, who estimate that the census has advanced to a particularly high percentage in the elevators that are systematically maintained. For this reason all persons involved were asked to contribute in the last days before the deadline was expired to an intensive ‘sprint’ information so that no elevator would remain outside the Register.
The General Secretariat of Industry recalls that the census concerns all lifts without any exception, whether in apartment buildings, office buildings, hotels, business or mixed facilities, even if they have already been certified or registered in another register.
The process is conducted free of charge through the Ministry of Development's electronic platform and is completed using Taxisnet codes. Owners and administrators who are experiencing difficulties may address their maintainers or installers in order to complete the registration in time.
At the same time, the Independent Consumer Market and Protection Authority noted that the framework for consumer protection, user safety and enforcement checks will be organised after the deadline.
The meeting also discussed the next day after the census was completed. With more accurate data on all of the country's lifts, the State will be able to process the available data and plan more targeted policies for the supervision of the industry, risk prevention and continuous strengthening of the safe operation of the lifts.
It is recalled that administrative fines per lift, amounting to EUR 1,000 for residential buildings, EUR 2,500 for professional or mixed-use buildings and EUR 5,000 for buildings accessible to the general public, are foreseen for the non-inventory.
Upon expiry of the deadline, the inventory number will be a key technical identification information for each lift and should be confirmed by the maintainer or installer as part of their regular activity. According to the General Secretariat of Industry, lifts that have not been registered will not be legally maintained, while the continuation of their operation without legal maintenance is not allowed.
At the same time, on the basis of Article 238 of Law 5297/2026, maintainers and installers are required to indicate in the maintenance documents the statutory lift inventory number. Otherwise they fall under the same administrative penalties, by category of lift, as provided for in the non-inventory.
