Chile's prosecution today announced the initiation of an investigation into possible human trafficking in the country last year of hundreds of Haitian children whose family ties with the adults accompanying them have not been verified.

The investigation began after the revelations of Chilean radio station BioBio, which brought to light a report by the Court of Auditors which reported the entry into the country of hundreds of Haitian children in 2025, as part of a family reunion.

According to the Chilean immigration agency, at least 12 suspects repeatedly entered Chile and presented themselves as ‘responsible’ children and adolescents from Haiti.

According to the prosecution, family ties between children and their escorts were "not verified by the competent authorities" either during the journey or at their entry into Chile.
