The Lutheran Church of Sweden announced today that he initiated an investigation against her husband of the Conservative Prime Minister Wolf Kristerson, who has been ordained clergyman, after information written to the press on its role in the institution that runs raises ethical and ethical issues.
Following the complaints made to the diocese to which the Birgita Ed, she initiated an investigation into whether she is capable of performing her priestly duties. The Church did not clarify the content of the complaints.
Birgita Ed, who wears the characteristic priestly collar in her public appearances, alongside her husband, recently drew media attention, after the Aftonbladet newspaper published a series of reports on her foundation, Falloknastiftelsen.
According to the newspaper, the foundation was recruiting volunteers to gather resources and renovate its headquarters, in exchange for a "good network" and meetings at the prime minister's official residence. Birgita Ed also allegedly used her relationships within the Church to receive donations and free services, such as technical support for her foundation's computers.
In its communication the Church stresses that such investigations usually last "many months" and that the decision is finally announced. The investigation may not lead to disciplinary action or it may be necessary to impose a penalty on the PM's wife: either a written reprimand, a period of suspension of her duties or to prohibit her from exercising her priestly duties.
The Lutheran Church of Sweden, numbering 5.4 million faithful to a total of 10.6 million inhabitants, has been officially separated from the state since 2000.
Sweden is preparing for the September parliamentary elections and according to polls the left opposition precedes the right-wing government of Kristerson, which is based on Sweden's far-right Democratic party.
