Culture Minister Lena Mendoni sent a letter to Ukraine's Culture Minister Tetyana Berezhna expressing the sincere condolences and support of Greece for the Russian attack of 15 June, which caused damage to Lavra of the Kiev Caves, monument registered in UNESCO World Heritage List.

In her letter, Lena Mendoni strongly condemns the blow to an area of outstanding architectural, historical, cultural and religious importance, stressing that cultural heritage cannot be an objective or a means of tooling during armed conflicts.

At the same time, it reaffirms the practical support of Greece to Ukraine in the area of heritage protection.

In particular, it announces the intention of the Ministry of Culture to cover the cost of preparing restoration studies for the Cave Lavra, as well as the promotion of a Memorandum of Understanding between the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, with the aim of organising specialised training workshops for Ukrainian conservationists of antiquities and works of art in Thessaloniki.
