The arrest of a 16-year-old foreigner was carried out by police officers in Porto Rafti, as part of an investigation into a blackmail case against a 14-year-old, from whom they allegedly obtained jewellery of a total value of approximately 10,000 euros.

From the police investigation it emerged that the 16-year-old, along with two more accomplices who have been identified and sought, forced during last May a 14-year-old foreigner gradually to deliver them gold jewels belonging to his mother. The perpetrators used threats of physical violence to achieve their purpose.

According to ELAS, the removed jewels were sent to a gold exchange, with the perpetrators receiving financial benefits. The total value of the jewellery removed is estimated at around 10,000 euros.

According to the police, the 16-year-old was arrested at noon on June 12 and faces charges of blackmail against co-operation, as well as violations of gun and flare law. For the same case his mother was also arrested, accused of neglecting minor supervision.

During the investigation carried out at the 16-year-old's residence, police officers detected and seized five flares, a flare launch mechanism and an iron fist.

The arrester was taken to the competent Prosecutor's Authority, while investigations by authorities continue to identify and arrest his two accomplices.
